THE FILIPINO COMMUNITY PRESENCE AND PARTICIPATION

TO MY FELLOW COUNTRYMEN,

Not only in Barrio Fiestas and basketball can we announce the Filipino presence as a distinct ethnic group. In London Borough of Newham, there are so many opportunities to announce ourselves as an ethnic group. The Newham Magazine publication can be a very good starting point.

The local government overlooks the Filipino community simply because we only indulge in the very basics of social existence; work – home –overtime – home and a Filipino fiesta here and there.

Why don’t we announce to Newham and the whole of the UK that there is an ethnic group called the Filipinos? Register to vote during local and general elections. Take the time to vote, either on your way to work or after work. Postal ballots can also be done these days so no more excuses. If you are eligible to vote, vote!

In this adopted country of ours, voting makes a difference. Do not be lulled into common belief that it doesn’t matter whether one votes in any election or not.

To compare us to other ethnic groups like the Africans, Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, The Caribbeans, etc. Why are they listened to by the local and national governments? It is simply because they “make noises about their needs” or participates in local social and community programmes.

You too can start by coming to KAMPI Annual Basketball Tournament at Lister Community School, St Marys Road, Plaistow, London E13. Whether to play in a team or just as a supporter. We are now in our 16th year!

So, register as a voter and vote! Attend local social and community programmes! Watch some Filipino basketball! Mabuhay ang Pilipino!!!
